AMERICAN BAPTISTS CONTINUE EARTHQUAKE
RELIEF ASSISTANCE IN INDIA
American Baptists continue to assist relief efforts
in the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake Jan. 26 in
western India that may have claimed 35,000 or more lives.
The American Baptist World Relief Office has sent
$25,000 in One Great Hour of Sharing emergency relief
funds through Church World Service. CWS's partner,
Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), is assisting
over 35,000 families in three areas--Bhachau and
Ghandidam, near Bhuj, and Jamnagar and Rajkot--with
food, potable water, relief kits, kitchen utensils, blankets,
tarpaulins and tents. More than 500 people are benefiting
from a CASA feeding program near Bhuj.
An additional $5,000 in emergency relief funds has
been released to American Baptist International Ministries
for the relief and rehabilitation work of the Baptist Church
of Hyderabad, India, an American Baptist partner in
ministry. The funds will be used to assist the church in its
relief program to provide clothing, utensils and other
household articles as well as financial assistance to 500
families in Gujarath state. The Rev. Dr. G. Samuel, pastor
of the Hyderabad church, said, "To say it in one sentence,
this is the worst calamity and most terrible national
tragedy in the known history of India."
The World Relief Office and International
Ministries urge American Baptists to pray for relief
workers, church leaders and the many people in India
affected by this catastrophe.
American Baptists wishing to contribute to the
recovery may do so through One Great Hour of Sharing
(line 7 of the Monthly Report of Mission Support)
designating funds for "India Earthquake Relief."
Others outside the American Baptist family
interested in helping may do so by making contributions
payable to American Baptist Churches, marking "India
Earthquake Relief" on the memo line of the check. Mail to:
ABC World Relief Office, P.O. Box 851, Valley Forge, PA
19482-0851 marked "India Earthquake Relief."
