New job brings Canada's Anglican Journal editor full circle --
Vianney Carriere was news editor in early '90s

Leanne Larmondin
Web Manager
TORONTO
Vianney (Sam) Carriere, acting editor of the Anglican Journal since August
2000, has been confirmed as editor of the national newspaper.

Mr. Carriere, who has worked for the Anglican Church of Canada since 1990,
will continue as editor of MinistryMatters, the church's magazine for those
involved in ministry. He will also continue to oversee the work of the
website team.

In an announcement to the national office, Doug Tindal, director of the
information resources department, noted Mr. Carriere's "extensive skills
and experience as a journalist, combined with his knowledge of the Canadian
church, make him ideally suited for this work."

The seasoned journalist was a reporter and editor at the Globe and Mail for
22 years and taught journalism at Ryerson Polytechnic University before
joining the Anglican Journal. He was the Journal's news editor from 1990
until 1993, when he became the national church's editor of print resources,
which include the ministry magazine.

Mr. Carriere succeeds Rev. David Harris as editor of the Journal. Mr.
Harris, editor since January 1996, left the Journal last August in the wake
of the elimination of eight full-time positions at the national office and
changes to the national church structure.

At that time, Mr. Carriere confirmed his commitment to the Journal's
independent editorial policy: "The editorial independence and mandate of
the Journal do not change," he said the day after the cuts were announced.

"The changes that have taken place are resource and finance driven. We're
going to do the best we can with the resources we have. We will chart a
parallel course to the church, a course that sometimes converges, sometimes
diverges. But our mandate remains unchanged."
