The National Council of Churches has elected Wesley M. "Pat" Patillo, a
veteran Southern Baptist communicator from Birmingham, Ala., to be its
associate general secretary for communications. He begins his new work
April 16.
Pattillo, currently North American representative for Hong Kong Baptist
University, previously served as communications officer for the Southern
Baptist Convention's flagship institution, Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Louisville, Ky., for 14 years and Samford University in
Birmingham, Ala., for eight years.
Pattillo, a native of Mobile, Ala., earned degrees in journalism and mass
communications from the University of Georgia and Ohio State University. His
wife, Zelma Mullins Pattillo, is an ordained Southern Baptist minister and a
board certified chaplain.

Carolyn Thomas-Nunery, a former member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
Board of Pensions, died March 9 of breast cancer. She was 47.
A memorial service was held March 14 at the Paoli (Pa.) Presbyterian
Church.

Edwin Cardinal Cassidy, president of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for
Promoting Christian Unity and a leader in initiating formal talks between
the Roman Catholic Church and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), has
announced his retirement.
Cassidy came to Louisville, Ky., in December for the first-ever round of
formal conversations between the Vatican and the PC(USA). The second round
of conversations was scheduled to begin at the Vatican March 18.
Cassidy is succeeded by Walter Cardinal Kasper, who took up his new work
March 3.
