CWS IS ALERT TO UNMET NEEDS IN FLOODED MIDWEST COMMUNITIES

April 23, 2001, New York City -- Church-based volunteers throughout the
Midwest floods region continue to assist in local community
disaster-response efforts, such as dike construction, and it appears likely
that, throughout the region, there will be new interfaith groups formed in
communities affected by spring floods. But the impact on the most
vulnerable residents of the communities at risk is not yet clear.

Church World Service volunteer disaster consultants continue to monitor
the situation. These include CWS Regional Facilitator Ellis Wykstra,
Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC); Regional Facilitators
Bob and Cheri Baer, United Methodist Church; and Perri Graham, CWS Disaster
Resource Consultant in Minnesota, Episcopal Church, and regional director
of the CWS Minneapolis office. Graham has been in contact with
representatives of other voluntary organizations in region to assess the
situation.

Persons wishing to contribute to CWS humanitarian assistance among persons
affected by the U.S. Midwest flooding may do so c/o:

Church World Service, 28606 Phillips St., P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, IN 46515.
