Presiding bishop announces resignation of church's treasurer

The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, The Most Reverend Frank T.
Griswold, announced today the resignation of Stephen Duggan, the Treasurer of the
Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society (DFMS) and the General Convention, saying
that his work has been carried out "with great distinction and incredible
commitment."

Duggan came from Arthur Andersen to join the DFMS on November 1, 1995 at the
invitation of the then Presiding Bishop, Edmond Browning. He will leave his post
no later than December 31, 2001. Commenting on his tenure, Duggan said he had
"accomplished those things the church had in mind when I was called, namely to
restore the stability and credibility of the church's financial situation."

Griswold said, "There is no way to express adequately the immense gratitude
of the entire Church for the leadership, expertise and dedication Steve has
brought to us. I know that those who have worked with Steve on various
committees and commissions join me in expressing deep appreciation for his
ministry among us over the last five years."

"I think the church is in a position now to move forward with a strategic
plan that will bring it to the next level of stewardship," Duggan said. "I am
grateful for the opportunity I've had in working here."

The Presiding Bishop indicated that the search for a successor would begin
through a process that will be specified soon.
