Cedar Rapids, IA - Coe College President Emeritus Joseph E. McCabe, who in
1997 donated to Coe every dollar he had earned during more than 40 years of
service to the college, died on April 9 at age 88. McCabe, who served as
Coe's president from 1958 to 1970, maintained an office at the college until
shortly before his death. In October 1997, he shocked Coe's Board of
Trustees by announcing that he and his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Virginia
Welch, had decided to return every dollar he had earned from the college
-$458,616.67.
