ENID, Okla. (DNS) -- Students attending Disciples colleges and
universities will soon have a new scholarship program that will
honor the tradition of Phillips University, which closed in
1998.
The Phillips board of trustees has transferred $3 million of
the university's remaining assets to the Phillips University
Legacy Foundation (PULF). The foundation will award annual
scholarships to students attending Disciples colleges and
universities who demonstrate potential for leadership in the
church. Faculty of Disciples institutions, including the former
faculty and staff of Phillips University who served in the last
years the school was open, also will be eligible.
"This is an imporant event for Disciples," said Dennis Landon,
president of the Disciples Division of Higher Education.
"Phillips University has been an important institution to the
church, and its legacy will live on in the scholarship program
and the students whom it will benefit. On behalf of the church
and its member institutions, we are extremely grateful for
Phillips' decision."
Phillips University declared bankruptcy in 1998. The trustees
have also approved offering modest educational grants for
academic year 2001-2002 to students who were enrolled at
Phillips during its last two years of operation (1996-1998), but
did not graduate from the university. "Phillips was always
about the students, and these grants signify the university's
ongoing concern and appreciation for those who were on campus
during some difficult times," said G. Curtis Jones, Phillips
president.
PULF has agreed to work with the Division of Higher Education
in administering the scholarship distribution process.
Scholarship applications will be solicited early next year, with
the first grants available for the 2002-03 academic year.
