National office fills communications post;
Media veteran will manage synod, residential schools communications

TORONTO
The Anglican Church of Canada has a new communications consultant. Anthony
(Tony) Whittingham joined the national office in May to assume
responsibility for external communications for General Synod, including
media relations. During the tenure of his contract position, Mr.
Whittingham will direct the church's communications strategy in residential
schools matters and will be responsible for external communications
surrounding the 36th meeting of General Synod, scheduled for July 4-11.

Mr. Whittingham replaces Doug Tindal in the external relations portfolio,
following Mr. Tindal's departure from the national office earlier this month.

A Toronto-based specialist in strategic planning and communications
management, Mr. Whittingham brings a broad professional background of
public affairs experience in the private, public and not-for-profit
sectors. Beginning his career as a journalist, Mr. Whittingham worked as a
staff writer and editor for a variety of publications, including the
Kingston Whig-Standard, Wall Street Journal, Financial Post and Maclean's
Magazine. As a public relations and public affairs specialist, Mr.
Whittingham has practised in Toronto, in South East Asia and in New York,
working with clients on communications programs in economic development,
trade and investment, financial services, environmental management,
university enrolment strategies and performing arts organizational
development.

A lifelong Anglican, Mr. Whittingham is a graduate of Trinity College,
Toronto, the Université de Montpellier in France and Queens' College,
Cambridge in England.
