Five new churches selected for Walton awards

by Bill Lancaster

LOUISVILLE, June 8, 2001-The General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) at its meeting here on the eve of the 213th General Assembly
approved Sam & Helen Walton Awards to five outstanding new church
developments.  The five are:

* Seattle Community Church, Synod of Alaska/Northwest, Seattle Presbytery;

* Parkway Presbyterian church, Synod of South Atlantic, Cherokee Presbytery;

* Tyger River Presbyterian Church, Synod of the South Atlantic, Foothills
Presbytery;

* Northern Lakes Community Church, Synod of the Covenant, Presbytery of
Mackinac;

* Clanton Presbyterian Church, Synod of the Mid-Atlantic, Presbytery of
Charlotte.

In late December, 1991, Sam and Helen Walton, founders of Wal-Mart, made a
generous gift of $6 million through the Presbyterian Foundation, $3 million
of which was designated for new church developments. In 2001, the awards
are for $50,000 each. Funds may be used for a variety of purposes including
site acquisition, construction, and programs that help define and expand the
new church's mission and ministry.

The awards are granted to new churches which demonstrate that they advance
the Great Ends of the Church as defined by the PC(USA), meet or exceed
expectations for the project in numerical growth, strength of discipleship,
strength of stewardship, and strength in Christian witness, peacemaking and
social change, and are meeting their financial obligations and giving at
least 10 percent of their operating budget to Presbyterian basic mission
support.

The General Assembly Council will forward the recommendations to the 213th
General Assembly as the 2001 Walton Award Recipients. The selections are
made by the Mission Development Resources Committee of the National
Ministries Division.
