YAD weighs career choices: PR and Ministry

by Midge Mack

LOUISVILLE, June 9 - "I've met just wonderful people from all over the
country, and they're all here to do their job in ministry. I'm really
excited about the opportunity to work with them," Tiffany Furukawa says.

Tiffany is one of 173 Youth Advisory Delegates (YADS) to the 213th General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meeting in Louisville, Ky June
8-15. As such she votes on all Assembly business just prior to the 558
commissioners' votes, an "advisory" vote. In the working committee sessions
she has full voice and her vote counts.

Tiffany is one of those who has "always been part of a church," in her case
Alamosa Presbyterian in Alamosa, Colo. near Pueblo. When the Rev. Charles
Proudfoot came as pastor three years ago, he took special interest in the
bright young graduating senior preparing to attend a Christian college in
Colorado Springs.

After she finished two years there she took a year off, serving as youth
Elder and assisting with organization and programming for fellowship,
outreach and intergenerational groups in her congregation. While attending
Front Range Community College for a year, she narrowed her postgraduate
considerations to a career in public relations or, possibly, ministry, and
now plans to graduate with a business degree from Metro State University in
Denver.

Here at the Assembly she serves, for two days, along with nine other YADs
and 40 commissioners, on the Assembly Committee on Pensions, Benefits and
Stewardship. The committee will decide which recommendations from the
denomination's Board of Pensions and its investment arm, the Presbyterian
Foundation, to accept and endorse for final commissioner's vote at the
Assembly's plenary.
