Practice votes reveal tidbits about commissioners

by Nancy D. Borst

LOUISVILLE, June 9 – Commissioners to the 213th General Assembly were
introduced to the electronic voting machines they will use for business with
a few lighter yet revealing questions in their opening session Saturday
afternoon.

More than 500 commissioners are gathered here this week for the Assembly,
which is the annual business meeting of the 2.5-million member denomination.

The Rev. Syngman Rhee, Moderator of the Assembly, guided commissioners
through several "practice" votes, and commissioners responded candidly.
These votes revealed:

* The vast majority (81 percent) of commissioners are attending their first
Assembly as a commissioner.

* Nearly one-third of the commissioners (32 percent) are between the ages of
50 and 59. The next largest age groups are those 40-49 and those 60-69. The
exception is advisory delegates, of whom more than 80 percent are in their
20s.

* Thirty-one percent of commissioners admitted they had read no more than 20
percent of the General Assembly reports they had been given. Another 20
percent said they had read as many as 40 percent of the reports, and 30
percent said they had read the majority of the reports.
