New design intended to make navigation easie

Website visitors with a keen eye will have noticed a different look at
anglican.ca, the website of the Anglican Church of Canada. The redesign,
launched in June, is both cosmetic, with a more modern logo and
navigational bars, and practical, aimed at making the site more useful to
visitors.

Keith Nunn, website manager of design and programming, says the redesign
was prompted by sheer ennui with the three-year-old original website look
and some navigational problems faced by an ever-burgeoning site.

"It's a little more modern than before and more cohesive," says Mr. Nunn,
explaining that the anglican.ca website is the parent site of a number of
smaller websites, including those of the Anglican Journal, MinistryMatters,
Anglican Book Centre, ABC Publishing and the recently-launched Path Books.
Most sections of the anglican.ca site and the subsidiary sites are more
clearly identifiable as parts of the national church's site.

The biggest change is perhaps found on the bookstore and publishing
websites (Anglican Book Centre < http://www.anglicanbookcentre.com/ >, ABC
Publishing <http://www.abcpublishing.com/> and Path Books
<http://www.pathbooks.com/>), which feature similar navigation and layout.
All are clearly cross-linked to make moving between them easier.

One new feature on the home page is the Site Sampler, a listing of six
website departments randomly selected from anglican.ca. Visitors can log on
and see featured, for example, links for Anglican Appeal, General Synod,
Planned Giving and other national church ministries and programs. Each time
the home page is reloaded or refreshed, the sampler shows links for six
different sections.

"We have a number of smaller websites which don't warrant graphical banners
on the home page," notes Mr. Nunn. Because these sites and subsections of
the national site often aren't linked from the home page, they only see
sporadic visits from web surfers. "People may not have even known they were
there."
