Commissioner comes here from "middle of a whirlwind"

by Midge Mack

LOUISVILLE, June 12 - Norma Jean Jones is stated clerk of Muddy Creek
Presbyterian Church in Butler, Pa., where there are nine other Presbyterian
churches. This location, in the Presbytery of Beaver-Butler, is very close
to the center of the most densely Presbyterian area in the country.

Very soon after the beginning of the Confessing Church Movement, the
presbytery was asked to vote on joining it. An extremely close vote, with
little advance warning to the component churches, led to a call for
rescinding the vote that has still not been resolved.

Because sessions of many of the small churches in the Presbytery of
Beaver-Butler do not meet during the summer months, Norma Jean's session
has had no opportunity even to discuss the issue.
"Yes, the congregation is aware of it," she says, "because it's been in all
the papers, but there's no way to tell if we'd vote for or against it. We
just feel we're in the middle of a whirlwind."

Norma Jean herself, recently retired from K-mart, is delighted to be able
now to do the church work she's always wanted to do. Her session nominated
her unanimously to the presbytery to be this year's General Assembly
commissioner. Since this is her first Assembly, she's enjoying a full
schedule of discoveries. Her assigned committee, Catholicity and Ecumenical
Relations, finished its work on the first day, so she can now savor other
aspects of the Assembly experience.
