Theological Issues Committee members prepare Minority Report
by Jane Hines
LOUISVILLE, June 12 - Ten members of the Assembly Committee on Theological
Issues, Educational Institutions have prepared a minority report in response
to Overtures 43, 51 and 52 pertaining to salvation through Jesus Christ.
Their report says: "We recommend that the General Assembly respond to
overtures 01-43, 01-51, and 01-52 by recognizing the sense of urgency and
the evangelistic challenge which face us in our congregations and
communities by reaffirming those teachings of our confessions which remind
us that:
"God has been revealed in and through Jesus Christ to be the unique
Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit; Jesus Christ, fully divine and fully
human, is the singular saving Lord as understood through Scripture, our
confessions and Book of Order; and all people are encouraged to embrace and
experience the Lordship of Christ by putting Jesus first in their lives."
The minority report also asks "That the General Assembly instruct the
Office of Theology and Worship to provide study and worship materials that
will assist congregations to grow in their understanding of the Lordship of
Jesus Christ in Scripture, our Book of Confessions and Book of Order."
The rationale for the report states: "This enables the General Assembly to
(1) send a clear message about Jesus Christ to the grassroots of our church,
to our national and international partners in the mission of Jesus Christ,
and to the contemporary world in which we live: (2) raise up the witness of
Scripture to Jesus Christ as the one to whom every knee shall bow and every
tongue confess as Lord (Phil 2:11) and as the way, the truth and the life
(John 14:6); and (3) point to our constitution as the historical and
contemporary proclamation that the risen Christ is the Savior for all people
(1967 Confession 9.10) and that the church is called to present the claims
of Jesus Christ leading persons to repentance, acceptance of him as Savior
and Lord, and new life as his disciples (G-3.0300b).
The Assembly will hear both the majority and minority reports when the
report of the committee comes to the floor
