Asian Council dinner was held

LOUISVILLE, June 12 - A small, sparkling piece of glass will be the key to
financial independence for the National Asian Presbyterian Council (NAPC).
That's the hope of the service organization's leaders, who outlined their
plans Tuesday during their annual dinner at the 213th General Assembly of
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
"We are asking all churches to be partners in the Asian ministry," said Dr.
Edward G. Tanng, former NAPC moderator and convener of the mission fund
campaign. Tanng said that, while no firm goal had been established for the
campaign, a $1 million endowment would generate enough income to fund the
council's current $30,000 budget.
Getting there won't be easy, though. The council has an all-volunteer
staff, and a national mail solicitation of Asian congregations would cost
$10,000. A lower key fundraising effort raised only $8,000 for two years'
effort.
Now Asian leaders in the church, through networking and their own gifts,
are being asked to raise enough to fund the national effort.
The key to success may be a small, elegant oval piece of crystal (the shape
denoting unity), with the PC(USA) logo, symbols of Asian culture, and linked
circles for the Asian nationalities represented in the church.
Tanng heard of a Canadian church's successful fundraising campaign that
used a crystal piece and decided to try the same approach. For Asian
Presbyterians, he noted, nearly $200,000 could be raised (after expenses) if
each church made a single $35 contribution ($15 of which is not deductible).
A website - www.napccrystal.com - has all the details. Those who wish to
make a gift may make checks payable to NAPC and mail them to Rev. Edward
Tanng, 1501 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, Calif., 90017; or to Presbyterian
Distribution Service, Customer Service Department, 100 Witherspoon St.,
Louisville, Ky., 40202-1396. For orders sent to Louisville, please specify
product ID number 72-410-01001.
Gifts of more than $35 are welcomed and encouraged.
Tuesday's NAPC dinner also included appearances by two of the church's most
prominent Asian Americans, immediate past General Assembly Moderator Syngman
Rhee and newly appointed Vice Moderator Janet Arbesman. General Assembly
Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick and Worldwide Ministries Division Executive
Director Marian McClure also delivered greetings, as did new NAPC Moderator
Kyungil Ghymn.
Several presbytery executives and other dignitaries were recognized as
well, and the benediction was given in half a dozen languages.
