Korean hopes for PC(USA): to be more evangelical
by Midge Mack
LOUISVILLE, June 13 - The Rev. Harrison S. Woong Kim, pastor of the
Fayetteville (N.C.) Korean Presbyterian Church in the non-geographical
Presbytery of Atlantic-Korean, came to the 213th General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. as a first-time minister-commissioner.
He found it to be a moving and impressive experience, enhancing his
conviction that the denomination is "one of the leading Christian groups in
the world."
Still he was shocked that the committee he was assigned to, Theological
Issues and Institutions, had any reason to consider overtures 51 and 52,
asking to Assembly to declare (in effect) that only Jesus Christ is the way
to salvation.
At home, the ministry of his 300-member congregation focuses on
inter-racial marriage and family issues.
"Usually it is when a Korean woman is married to an American that the
cultural differences are most troublesome," he said. We meet with the
couple, or the whole family, to teach them and to bring them to church for
Sunday school and Bible study.
He and his wife, Esther, have three children: Julia, a Harvard graduate who
majored in statistics; Jody, a University of North Carolina dentistry grad,
proud to add D.D.S. to his name; and Josef, a North Carolina State student
who double majors in computer and electronics.
This year Rev. Kim is moderator of his 16-church presbytery. Speaking
frequently through an interpreter, he expressed gratitude for the diversity,
along with opportunity for minority involvement, in the denomination. As he
works through this week's experience he remains hopeful that the PC(USA)
will be more evangelical in the future.
