Assembly thanks Louisville
By Nancy D. Borst
LOUISVILLE, June 13 - The 213th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) paused at the beginning of its business Wednesday to thank the city
of Louisville and those who were instrumental in bringing the denomination's
headquarters to the city 15 years ago.
The Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, and John
Detterick, Executive Director of the General Assembly Council, presented
framed etchings of the Presbyterian Center to several church and civic
leaders, past and present. These individuals were instrumental in the
relocation of the church's headquarters or are involved with hosting this
Assembly.
Louisville appeared out of the running as the church pondered where to set
up its new re-united headquarters after reunion in 1983. However, with
slogans such as "Don't say 'Amen' to Louisville," the city convinced the
199th General Assembly (1987) in Biloxi, Miss., to select Louisville.
Detterick said when he prepared to move to Louisville five years ago, he
received a bright purple T-shirt with several versions of how to pronounce
the city's name printed on it, including "Looavull" and "Lewisville."
"After five years I'm still not sure which is right," Detterick said. "But I
can honestly say Louisville is a great place to live and work."
Mayor David Armstrong, a member of Louisville's Highland Presbyterian
Church, welcomed the Assembly and credited the presence of the church's
headquarters with making a difference in the quality of life in the city.
It was announced that Wednesday, June 13, had been declared Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) day in Jefferson County, Ky.
