Delegates vote to place music directors on roster

ST. LOUIS Delegates to the 61st Regular Convention of The Lutheran Church 
Missouri Synod on Thursday, July 19, took a second vote on a resolution to 
place directors of parish music on the roster of church-body workers as 
"ministers of religion commissioned."

The resolution, defeated earlier in the week by delegates meeting here in 
the America s Center, passed by a wide margin, 805 to 294.

The action formally recognizes those who have "completed an approved 
academic program of study in church music" and who have been "certified for 
a call into this ministry," according to guidelines established by the LCMS 
Board for Higher Education and the Synod s Commission on Worship.

Delegates voted to reconsider the failed resolution after adopting a 
similar one that places directors of family-life ministry on the roster as 
"ministers of religion commissioned." It was, said one delegate, "an issue 
of fairness."
