TULSA, OK - Peter J. Michael, professor of geosciences at the University of
Tulsa (UT), will lead a 65-day scientific expedition to the Arctic, coming
within about 150 miles of the North Pole. Two UT undergraduate students will
also be a part of the July 31-Oct. 3 expedition. Michael will be the chief
scientist on the U.S. Coast Guard's largest ship, The Healy, a 420-foot-long
icebreaker. A German ship, the Polarstern, a partner in the expedition, will
carry other scientists. The U.S. program is funded with a grant of $1.1
million from the National Science Foundation, including about $300,000 to
UT. The project is known as the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge Expedition.

DANVILLE, KY - Some Centre College students and recent graduates are
sporting shorter hairdos this summer after donating their hair to Locks of
Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to poor children
who suffer from medical hair loss. The prostheses are used to help restore
self-esteem and confidence; the children receive them at no cost. Wigs made
of human hair usually cost thousands of dollars. To learn more about Locks
of Love, visit www.locksoflove.org.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Steven D. Bloom, an assistant professor of physics and
astronomy at Hampden-Sydney College, has been awarded a Small Research Grant
by the American Astronomical Society. The money will be used to conduct a
study of unidentified gamma-ray objects discovered by the space-based
Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, whose mission ended about one year ago. The
study, in which students may participate, will use Hampden-Sydney's 16-inch
Meade telescope and a 24-inch University of Wyoming telescope. The objects
in question are believed to be either very distant ultra-luminous galaxies
or products of black holes within our Milky Way Galaxy.
