Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

Price Gwynn, former moderator of the General Assembly, broke his left leg
in two places in a recent fall at his summer home.

Gwynn is at home in Charlotte now, where he will need 6-8 weeks to recover.
He is reportedly most upset that he will not be allowed to go jogging for
six months.

Well wishes can be sent to Price Gwynn, 5100 Sharon Road, #1505, Charlotte,
NC 28210-4799.

Donald G. Campbell, director of Congregational Ministries Division, has
announced two staff appointments: the Rev. Steven Shussett as the new
Associate for Spiritual Formation, effective July 9. Shusett, a graduate of
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary who has served pastorates in Virginia and
Maryland, will edit Hungryhearts News and also will be responsible for
overseeing the development of other print resources; and Tony Schlisser as
associate for research and sales on the marketing team of Congregational
Ministries Publishing. Schlisser, who has worked on the national staff in
various capacities for seven years, will produce the new "e-zine" version of
Ideas! For Church Leaders (www.pcusa.org/ideas) and will also oversee the
marketing team's Web sites and provide research and sales information.

###

Sally Shoemaker Robinson, a former Presbyterian missionary to Korea, has
been named chair of the Global Board of the United Bible Societies (UBS),
the world fellowship of Bible societies.

Robinson is a trustee of the American Bible Society and has chaired its
board since 1996. An ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),
Robinson served the church in Korea from 1959-1971.

###

Mitsuko Hironaka, who served on the national staff of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) for 30 years in various administrative capacities, died June
25 at the age of 91.

Hironaka was interned at the Tule Lake and Amache War Relocation Centers
during World War II.

She began her career with the PC(USA) in 1944 and retired in 1974 after
working for the Board of Christian Education in Philadelphia, McCormick
Theological Seminary in Chicago and the Board of Pensions in San Francisco.
After retirement, she did volunteer work in San Francisco for Eastern Park
Presbyterian Retirement Apartments where she lived, for Calvary Presbyterian
Church and for Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center's Thrift Shop.
