ELCA Council Elects New Committee Members

  ELCA COUNCIL ELECTS NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS

     INDIANAPOLIS (ELCA) -- The Evangelical Lutheran Church in
  America (ELCA) Church Council elected four people to the Advisory
  Committee for the ELCA Department of Communication and two people to
  the Steering Committee for the ELCA Commission for Women.  The Church
  Council met August 7-8 at the Westin Indianapolis Hotel.
     Elected to the Department for Communication Advisory Committee
  were:
     + The Rev. Kathleen O. Reed, ELCA New England Synod.  She was
  elected to a six-year term as clergy member of the committee.  Reed
  is the pastor at Christ Lutheran Church, Natick, Mass.
     + Mary L. Butler, ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod, Christ the King
  Lutheran Church, Durango, Colo., was reelected to another six-year
  term as lay female.  She has been part of the advisory committee for
  three years.  Butler is contractor to the director of broadcast
  communication with the National Council of Churches.
     + Gregory D. Schieferstein, ELCA Montana Synod, Immanuel
  Lutheran Church, Missoula, Mont., was elected to a six-year term on
  the committee.  Schieferstein is news director for Evening Post
  Television, KPAX-TV.
     + Frank Ramos, Caribbean Synod, San Marcos Lutheran Church,
  Guaynabo, Puerto Rico was elected to a four-year term as lay male for
  the advisory committee.  Ramos is a self-employed owner of a
  communications/consulting firm.
     Elected to the Steering Committee of the Commission for Women
  were:
     + The Rev. Mia J. Baumgartner, ELCA Eastern Washington-Idaho
  Synod, Fullness of God Lutheran Church, Chelan, Wash., was elected to
  a four-year term as clergy. Baumgartner is past village pastor of
  Holden Village.
     + Sarah Verke, ELCA Saint Paul Area Synod, Incarnation Lutheran
  Church, St. Paul, Minn., was elected to a two-year term as lay female
  for the steering committee.  Verke works for Jewish Family and
  Children's Services as development assistant.
     The Church Council is the ELCA's board of directors.  Between
  meetings of the Churchwide Assembly, the Church Council is
  responsible for electing people to churchwide boards, steering
  committees of churchwide commissions and certain advisory committees.
  The 2001 ELCA Churchwide Assembly -- the highest legislative body of
  the church -- will meet Aug. 8-14 at the Indiana Convention Center.
