ELCA ASSEMBLY GIVES SERVUS DEI TO RICHARD L. MCAULIFFE
01-CWA21-LJ
INDIANAPOLIS (ELCA) -- The Church Council of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America today conferred the Servus Dei medal upon
Richard L. McAuliffe, treasurer of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America.
The churchwide assembly, the chief legislative authority of the
ELCA, is meeting here Aug. 8-14 at the Indiana Convention Center.
There are more than 2,000 people participating, including 1,040 ELCA
voting members. The theme for the biennial assembly is "Making
Christ Known: Sharing Faith in a New Century."
McAuliffe has served as treasurer of this church since February
1992. He will serve in that capacity until completion of his term on
January 31, 2001.
In recognition of a decade of service as treasurer, the Church
Council commended McAuliffe for excellent stewardship of the church's
financial and physical resources, his technical competence in the
field of finance, his unwavering commitment and his wry humor. The
citation continued, "His sound judgments have instilled trust among
the leaders and members of this church that the monies of the church
were being handled with integrity and care."
This award, designed by Ralph Menconi, was created to honor
retiring ELCA officers continuing a practice established by
predecessor church bodies to express special gratitude.
