BOWLING GREEN, Va. - The National Association of Presbyterian Souters (NAPS)
had a display at the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Ft. A. P. Hill in
Bowling Green, Va., from July 23 to Aug. 1. National President Eliot Kerlin
was joined by Treasurer John "Rush" Hart, Secretary Tom Petrik, Gene Foley,
and Fran Kerlin in meeting thousands of participants and visitors to the
quadrennial event.

More than 40,000 Scouts and leaders attended as participants, and tens of
thousands more visited each day as Scouting put its best programs and events
forward.

The military assisted in several areas using the activity as a training
event - how often can you practice mobilizing to help keep a city of people
that large running? - for various units and also as a recruiting tool.

Exhibits ranged from the National Scouting Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, to
the new "Venturing" program's Rain Forest exhibit, which was so close to
realistic the wildlife of the base were starting to move into the tent it
was in, with its higher than usual humidity and temperatures.

More than 1,500 membership applications were handed out to Scouts and
Leaders who were Presbyterian. NAPS also handed out over 6,000 hat pins and
4,200 CD openers that were provided by the Congregational Ministries
Division.

Presbyterians were also active on the chaplains' staff, organized by NAPS
vice-president the Rev. George Hupp. Despite rainy weather on Sunday more
than 5,000 people attended worship organized by Hupp on the east side of the
camp. A similar number attended the other Protestant service on the west
side.

NAPS also provided ushers and collection-counters for both services. The
offering was pledged to the national office of the Boy Scouts to provide
chaplain services at the High Adventure Bases the Boy Scouts of America
maintains in Florida, Minnesota, and New Mexico.
