PC(USA) aid is on its way to terror victims

Initial $20,000 split between NYC Presbytery, Church World Service

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - The Presbyterian Church (USA) has made its first financial
contributions to relief efforts organized in response to Tuesday's terrorist
attacks in New York City and Washington.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) announced Thursday that it had sent
an initial $10,000 to the Presbytery of New York City to help that regional
governing body respond to the crisis. PDA awaits requests from other
presbyteries in the New York and Washington areas, such as National Capital,
Red Stone, Long Island, and Elizabeth.

"We stand poised to immediately respond to Long Island, National Capital,
Redstone, Elizabeth, and all presbyteries that have been directly affected,"
said staff member Pamela Burdine.

PDA also has sent $10,000 to Church World Service (CWS), the relief and
development arm of the National Council of Churches, to help cover its
disaster-response expenses, including its timely placement of consultants in
the field to help coordinate and plan the ecumenical response to the
tragedy.

CWS members are meeting by telephone conference call every couple of days to
share information and coordinate theirs responses, Burdine said.
"The demands on our resources will be many," she said. "Therefore, effective
sharing of these resources is essential to provide the most comprehensive
response possible."

Response teams from a variety of denominations, including the PC(USA), are
prepared to go to the effected areas, but had not been mobilized by Thursday
afternoon, Burdine said.

"Generally, the way PDA works is that we do not just send money, we respond
to the need," Burdine said.

PDA is also planning to provide funeral resources to the affected
presbyteries. To make contributions to the PDA, log on www.pcusa.org/pda.
