Mike York, Board of Pensions executive, dies
by Jerry L. Van Marter
PHILADELPHIA - Michael D. York, 42, who served the Board of Pensions (BOP)of
the Presbyterian Church (USA) for almost 13 years, was buried Oct. 30. The
popular BOP executive died Oct. 26 - while the BOP board of directors was
meeting here - after battling cancer for more than a year.
York joined the BOP in 1989 as director of internal audit, but his passion
for member services led him much deeper into the board's work. He moved to
the operations side of the board's work in 1995 and led the BOP's "Managing
Total Quality" program, bringing to it a lively, energetic, and innovative
style of management and leadership.
York was instrumental in establishing the board's Call Service Center so
that members could make one call rather than having to find their way around
the separate groups within the Board. He then helped create the Regional
Service Teams of the board, an effort to focus on building more and stronger
personal relationships between the members and the BOP staff.
York was a Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of Montclair State
University. He is survived by his wife, Janet (Kmiec); son Tyler and
daughter Lyndsey; and his father, Jerry York.
