PDA sends $10,000 to tornado-ravaged Oklahoma

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE - Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has provided $10,000
from One Great Hour of Sharing offering funds to the Presbytery of Indian
Nations in response to severe tornado damage in western Oklahoma.

A line of severe thunderstorms on Oct. 9 produced a series of tornadoes that
whisked across parts of the Midwest, scattering debris in their broad,
winding paths. No fatalities were reported.

Nine people were hurt - none seriously - in Cordell, a town of 3,000 in
southwest Oklahoma, according to PDA. Officials said the tornadoes destroyed
at least 150 homes, and shattered the windows and ripped off the roofs of
other homes and businesses. About 275 homes, one-quarter of the homes in
Cordell, were damaged.

Tornadoes spawned by the same storm front also swept through eastern
Nebraska, where officials reported more than $1 million in damage to farms,
a post office, a city park and several homes and businesses. At least six
tornadoes touched down. No injuries were reported.

Emergency officials credited the area's warning system for saving many
lives. Carolyn Stephens, executive of the Presbytery of Indian Nations, said
no Presbyterian churches in the area were damaged. A school suffered severe
damage, forcing Cordell officials to move classes into nearby churches,
including First Presbyterian Church.
