The Asia Pacific Region of the World Student Christian Federation
(WSCF) held its 2001 Ecological Concern Program Workshop in Taiwan from
18 to 25th October. Delegates came from India, Australia, New Zealand,
Korea, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Those nominated from
Philippines and Sri Lanka were unable to obtain visas, so did not come.
The group was addressed by professors and environmental activists
from local schools and organizations. Each delegate shared some
information and description of environmental issues from his or her own
country, and they discussed regional concerns. Differences emerged
between the hemispheres. Delegates from Australia and New Zealand were
more concerned with nuclear power issues. The Thai delegate with racism
and ecology, and the Indians with the ecological and environmental
effects of economic globalization.
The seminar developed an action plan, hoping to leash the power of
churches to social change for ecological and environmental concern.
They also would like to see social power exercised in the spirit of the
Student Christian Movement (SCM), which can speak with one voice though
composed of students from many lands.
Taiwan was represented by three delegates from the humanities,
medicine and science, and by two observers. The WSCF itself sent four
staff members and secretaries.
