ECUMENICAL WORSHIP SERVICE 9 A.M. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30,
ACROSS FROM UNITED NATIONS, MARKS WORLD AIDS DAY
9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 - An ecumenical worship service marking
World AIDS Day will feature distribution of colorful, beaded AIDS pins made
by HIV-positive South African women. The international relief, development
and refugee assistance ministry, Church World Service, will present the
first pin to Ms. Stephanie Urdang, UNIFEM AIDS Coordinator, as a reminder
that in Africa, the majority of people living with AIDS are women.
Worship leaders will carry in an open Bible wrapped with a long red cloth,
then drape the cloth in the form of an AIDS ribbon around the pulpit. The
Rev. John L. McCullough, Church World Service Executive Director, will bring
a brief message. Music will reflect South African and U.S. African American
and Protestant traditions.
The worship service is co-sponsored by Church World Service and the
"Ecumenical Working Group" of faith-based NGO representatives to the United
Nations. CWS is the humanitarian service arm of the National Council of
Churches' 36 U.S. Protestant and Orthodox member communions and works with
partners in more than 80 countries.
VENUE: Chapel of the Church Center for the United Nations, 777 U.N. Plaza at
