Palm Sunday's ecumenical in Santa Fe

Presbyterians, Catholics, Episcopalians join for public procession

by Ray Kersting

SANTA FE, NM - Ecumenical relations reached new heights in Santa Fe, NM, on March 24, as Episcopalians, Roman Catholics and Presbyterians joined in a Palm Sunday procession around the historic Plaza at the center of town.

Each congregation had Palm Sunday services, then processed to the Plaza from three directions. Once there, Archbishop Michael Sheehan blessed the palms, and all three congregations marched around the Plaza before heading back to their respective churches.

The participating congregations were Holy Faith Episcopal Church, the Catholic Cathedral of St. Francis, and First Presbyterian Church, the oldest Protestant church in New Mexico.

While some Catholic bishops around the country are easing back on ecumenical activities, Archbishop Sheehan has been a strong supporter of increased cooperation and good will, in an area where relations between Roman Catholics and Protestants have been very tense in the past.

Under the leadership of the Rev. Sheila Gustafson, the pastor of First Presbyterian, the three downtown churches have begun experimenting with an increasing number of shared activities.
