WCC looking for a few good stewards
40 young people will get hard work, low pay, up-close look at ecumenism
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE - The World Council of Churches (WCC) is accepting applications from young people 18 to 30 years old for stewardships at its Central Committee meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, from Aug. 15 to Sept. 5.
For more than 50 years, the WCC has invited young people from member churches throughout the world to serve in the background and observe up-close the deliberative work of ecumenism.
WCC officials warn that being a steward is hard work, with long hours. The stewards will help with all aspects of the meeting and will have a unique opportunity to see the ecumenical movement from the inside and to form friendships with Christians from around the world.
English is the WCC's working language, but knowledge of additional languages is useful. Applicants must be in good health. Working hours are irregular. Patience, teamwork and an ability to work with people from diverse cultures are essential.
Stewards normally cover their own transportation costs, but some subsidies are available. The WCC will be responsible for board and lodging expenses and will provide some pocket money.
The deadline for applications is April 12. Applicants will be informed by mid-May whether they are among the 40 to be selected.
An application form and more information about the Stewards Program are available online at www.wcc?coe.org/wcc/what/jpc/youth?e.html.
