Primates' Meeting 2002 #1
From the Anglican Communion Office in London
Easter Tuesday, 2 April 2002
The annual meeting of the Archbishops and Presiding Bishops of the Anglican
Communion will be held in Canterbury, England, April 10-16, 2002, hosted by
the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd and Rt Hon George L Carey. This
will be the final meeting of the Primates under the chairmanship of
Archbishop George Carey. The Archbishop of Canterbury is spiritual leader of
the world's 70 million Anglicans.
Since 1998 the Archbishop of Canterbury, as primus inter pares or first
among equals, has asked his fellow primates to come together for an
opportunity to engage in conversation and discussion on their ministry in
their own provinces and within the Communion. The gathering is in the nature
of a retreat, with Eucharist and Bible Study being the framework of their
being together, coming from 38 autonomous, yet inter-dependent, Churches.
The meeting, as in past years, is private. The primates will meet in the new
International Study Centre (ISC) in the precincts of the Mother Church of
the Anglican Communion, Christ Church Cathedral, Canterbury. The second
phase of the ISC will be formally opened during the Primates Meeting by the
Duke of Kent.
There will be no special provisions for media/press, but the Communications
Office staff will be on site with a special telephone number to handle any
inquiries. As in the past, a report will likely be issued at the close of
the meeting and photos will be made available via the
www.anglicancommunion.org website.
On Sunday, April 14, at 11am the Archbishop of Canterbury will be the
celebrant at the regular Sung Eucharist and his fellow primates will join
him in the procession. The Archbishop of Kenya, the Most Revd Dr David
Gitari, will preach. His text will be made available.
A brief photo-call (only) will follow the Eucharist, arranged in
co-operation with the cathedral, at approximately 12:30pm. Photographers
holding accredited press cards only will be admitted. There are no press
conferences scheduled at this time.
Photographers should contact: Cathedral Press Office - +44 1227 762862 or
