ELCA CHURCH COUNCIL ELECTS BOARD AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS

     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) elected clergy and lay individuals to fill
vacancies on boards, steering and advisory committees of the church.
     The Church Council is the ELCA's board of directors and serves as
the legislative authority of the church between its churchwide
assemblies.  The council met here April 6-7.  Assemblies are held every
other year; the next is Aug. 11-17, 2003 in Milwaukee.
     The council elects clergy and lay individuals to fill unexpired
terms on boards, steering committees and certain advisory committees of
the ELCA.  It also affirms certain positions recommended by commissions.
     The council elected:
     + Paul Carlson, First Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Neb., to Augsburg
Fortress Publishers -- the Minneapolis-based publishing house of the
ELCA -- board;
     + the Rev. Stacie R. Fidlar, St. John Lutheran Church, Rock
Island, Ill., to the ELCA Division for Ministry board;
     + the Rev. Russell C. Kleckley, St. John Lutheran Church, Irmo,
S.C., to the ELCA Division for Higher Education and Schools board;
     + the Rev. Jon R. Lee, King of Glory Lutheran Church, Dallas, to
the ELCA Board of Pensions' Board of Trustees;
     + Beverly A. Peterson, American Lutheran Church, Billings, Mont.,
to the ELCA churchwide nominating committee;
     + Martha E. Stortz, Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church,
Berkeley, Calif., to the ELCA Department for Ecumenical Affairs advisory
committee;
     + the Rev. Beth Marie Warpmaeker, Christ the King Lutheran Church,
Houston, to the ELCA Commission for Multicultural Ministries steering
committee;
     + the Rev. Timothy J. Wengert, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Glenside,
Pa., to the ELCA Department of Ecumenical Affairs advisory committee.
     The council ratified the nomination of the Rev. Wi Jo Kang, Korean
Lutheran Church, Colorado Springs, Colo., from the ELCA Association of
Asian and Pacific Islanders to the Commission for Multicultural
Ministries steering committee.
