Anglican Communion leaders witnessed the official opening of the
International Study Centre at Canterbury Cathedral on April 16. The Duke of
Kent unveiled the cornerstone plaque for the Phase 2 building. Great support
came from the Episcopal Church USA through the American Friends, chaired by
the Rev Dr John Harper of Washington, DC. The Cathedral Boys sang and Dean
Robert Willis welcomed those gathered. Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey
said the prayer of dedication.
Also present were the former Dean and his wife, John and Ruth Simpson. Dean
Simpson's vision for this centre began several years ago. He was present at
the Lambeth Conference 1998 with the Bishops as the corner stone for the
building was laid.
Candlelight Concert in the Crypt Chapel - this brought the Primates Meeting
2002 to a close April 16. Preceding the concert the primates, their wives
and the staff of Lambeth Palace and the Anglican Communion Secretariat, were
invited to dinner at Old Palace by Archbishop and Mrs Carey.
In session - AIDS and the Middle East Crisis occupied much of the Primates
agenda both in their deliberations and in prayer.
The Archbishop of Uganda celebrated the closing Eucharist of the Primates
Meeting in the Cathedral at Canterbury on Tuesday April 16.

Dinner with the new Dean of Canterbury, the Very Revd Robert Willis, in the
Deanery. The Archbishop and Mrs Carey were recipients of a special
retirement gift and tributes from the Primates of West Africa, Canada,
Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, and Ireland.
The wives that attended the meeting with their husbands spent time with
Eileen Carey in various activities.
The Bishop of Rochester, the Rat Revd Michael Nazir Ali, spoke to the
Primates on Christian/Muslim issues.
AIDS - a lengthy session, led by the Archbishop of Cape Town and the Very
Revd Colin Jones, former dean of Cape Town Cathedral and the Revd Ted Karpf,
dealt with the new for the churches to help "break the silence" of this
pandemic and to provide "a gospel of hope" to those infected and affected by
HIV/AIDS.
