World Vision/Taiwan (WV/T) organized students from girl's high
schools all over Taiwan for a project to support the
reconstruction of Sayfee Girls High School in Afghanistan. At an
April 9th press conference in Taipei students from 23 schools
pledged to promote fundraising among their classmates. Girls from
Taipei and Kaohsiung assembled a model of the school to
demonstrate for the cameras their participation in the actions in
Afghanistan.
WV/T board chairman Rev. Chou Lian-hwa said, "Educating girls
in Taiwan is the norm, but in Afghanistan only 15% of girls get
any education at all. Their literacy rate is only 4%. This
movement is based on the hope that all girls can have a happy
school experience."
WV/T volunteer Chen Wan-shui added, "In these times, girls must
be able to stand on their own, and strengthen themselves. Going
to school is the first step in this process. Educated women
become the teachers of the next generation." She hopes that more
people can join in this school reconstruction project.
One boy's high school, Taipei's Chien Kuo High, sent a
representative to the meeting to present a bouquet of flowers.
This student, Lin Chung-chun, said, "Boys and Girls are equal and
have equal rights to be educated. These flowers represent the
support of the students at my school. We, too, support the
reconstruction of the Sayfee School."
