ELCA COMMUNICATORS HONORED BY RELIGION COMMUNICATORS COUNCIL
02-094-JB
NEW YORK (ELCA) -- Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
communicators and publications were honored April 18 by the Religion
Communicators Council (RCC) during its annual meeting here. The RCC, a
national professional communication organization, presented 11 of its
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards to ELCA communicators for materials
produced in 2001.
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given in 37 categories
annually for excellence in writing, graphic design, art and photography,
audio and video productions, public relations and advertising, and
electronic communication. The awards are named for the late Victor
DeRose and the late Paul M. Hinkhouse, lithographers and longtime RCC
friends who shared a strong interest in communication excellence.
Lutherans won three awards of excellence, the top award in each
category. Melissa Ramirez, ELCA Department for Communication, Chicago,
was the award of excellence winner in the newspaper feature category.
She won for her feature, "Farm Workers Weather Storms of Immigration and
Indifference." Jonathan Freirichs, Lutheran World Relief, Baltimore,
was the award of excellence winner for posters titled "Organizational
Vision" and "Where Do Quilts Go?"
John L. Peterson, FaithandValues.com, Lexington, Ky., was an award
of excellence winner for the http://www.faithandvalues.com Web site. It
was also named best in class among all Web sites that were honored by
the RCC.
Lutheran Woman Today, the magazine of Women of the ELCA, won three
awards of merit. Nancy Goldberger, editor, and Deborah Bogaert,
managing editor and director for Bible studies, received awards of merit
for single magazine article ("God's Family Reunion"), black-and-white
photo series ("AIDS at 20") and single color photo ("A Heavy Metal
Christian.").
RCC recognized several other Lutheran organizations and
communicators with awards of merit for their work in communication:
+ Rex Paisley, ELCA Department for Communication, Chicago, for the
http://www.elca.org Web site.
+ The Rev. Marguerite Rourk, Lutheran Theological Southern
Seminary, Columbia, S.C., for "Southern Bulletin," in a category for
local and regional newsletters.
+ The Rev. Ron Glusenkamp, the Rev. Catherine Malotky and Linda
Renander, ELCA Board of Pensions, Minneapolis, for the organization's
2002 calendar, in a category for special print materials.
+ Linda Post Bushkofsky, Synod of Lakes and Prairies, Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), Bloomington, Minn., for "Synod School Closing" in a
booklet category. Bushkofsky was recently named executive director of
