American Baptist News Service (5/9/02)--The Rev. Dr. Roy L. Thompson,
longtime American Baptist pastor and denominational leader, now is serving
as interim executive minister for the American Baptist Churches of New
Jersey.
The Rev. Dr. Howard E. Taylor had preceded him in the interim position. The
Rev. A. Roy Medley resigned as executive minister to become general
secretary of American Baptist Churches USA earlier this year.
Thompson most recently served as interim executive minister for the
Philadelphia Baptist Association and chaplain for the American Baptist
Churches USA General Board.
Commissioned a home missionary in 1966, Thompson served for many years on
the staff of American Baptist National Ministries, retiring in 1991 as
manager of the Division of Congregational Ministries. He previously was
director of community witness for the Affiliated Baptist City Societies (now
American Baptist Churches of Metropolitan New York) and a World Mission
Support field counselor.
Ordained in 1958 at Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Thompson held
pastorates in Los Angeles and New Rochelle, N.Y., prior to his regional and
national American Baptist work.
The American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, which includes approximately
265 churches and 71,000 members, is one of 34 regions within American
Baptist Churches USA.
