Several years ago the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT)
teamed up with Taiwan's Union Commercial Bank to issue a
co-branded credit card, named the Ping-an (Peace) card. Every
year the bank turns over .2% of the fees it receives from the
card business to the PCT's "Peace Foundation" for use in social
welfare ministries. During the year 2001 that portion amounted
to 800 thousand Taiwan Yuan (US$20,260). A ceremony marking the
transfer was held last week.
The foundation has, in turn, distributed the funds to two
hospices and six church related social service centers. The Rev.
William J. K. Lo, the PCT's General Secretary and head of the
foundation's board, said that the church accompanies the
disabled, unemployed and poor people suffering in Taiwan on their
hard road.
Bank representative said that the Ping-an Card produces funds
for social benefit causes, and the bank is proud to be part of
this program. She praised the church's social concern work, and
said that the people of Taiwan can be chankful to Christians for
their love and blessing.
