Presbyterian Historical Society's 150th anniversary celebration is in full swing

Special events planned in Philadelphia, Montreat and at GA

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - On May 20, 1852, a group of Presbyterians committed to preserving the history of their church founded the Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS) and established it in Philadelphia.

On May 17, 2002, Presbyterians from far and wide gathered at the society's historic building for a reception, exhibit opening and book signing that kicked off the 150th anniversary celebration of this uniquely Presbyterian treasure.

The special exhibit, At Work in the World: Presbyterians and Their History at the Presbyterian Historical Society, features a small sampling of the treasures and artifacts - letters, photographs, books, pamphlets, minutes, registers, reports and other icons - that document how Presbyterians have lived within the culture and history of the United States and the world.

PHS director Frederick J. Heuser said, "For 150 years, the Presbyterian Historical Society has conscientiously guarded our history against the fires that consume and the folly that forgets. This exhibit reflects that sacred, silent witness to the struggles and the sacrifices, the heroism and the fidelity of those who have gone before."

At the festive event, renowned Presbyterian historian Virginia F. Rainey signed copies of her new book, Stewards of Our Heritage: A History of the Presbyterian Historical Society (Geneva Press, $19.95). The book draws upon correspondence, reports, minutes and photographs to tell the story of the society's first 150 years.

Additional activities planned for the anniversary year include on-line and traveling exhibits highlighting how the society's collections document Presbyterian and American history and culture; events and speakers at the Philadelphia and Montreat (NC) facilities of the PHS; and expanded exhibit space and special events at the upcoming 214th General Assembly in Columbus, OH.
