Black Family Convocation set
for July 24-28, in Orlando
More than 1,000 people are expected to attend this year's Black Ministry
Family Convocation, July 24-28 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando,
Fla. Theme of the convocation is "Thy Kingdom Come."
The convocation, held annually, brings together LCMS members involved in
Black ministry for worship, business sessions, Bible studies, idea sharing,
inspirational speakers, workshops and fellowship.
Keynote speakers at this summer's event include:
-- Dr. Oris Griffin, associate professor at James Madison University,
Harrisonburg, Va.; and
-- Rev. Glenn Lucas, mission and ministry facilitator for the Synod's
Pacific Southwest District.
Also addressing delegates and guests will be Synod President Gerald
Kieschnick and Rev. Yohannes Mengsteab, facilitator for new African
immigrant and urban missions with LCMS World Mission.
The convocation will offer two workshops for adults:
-- "Single in the Kingdom -- now what do I do?" will examine the roles of
never married, divorced and widowed people in the congregation.
-- "Reaching and retaining youth for the Kingdom" will share strategies for
reaching out to today's young people.
Six workshops will be available to youth participants.
This year's convocation will include one "free" day so that families can
enjoy the various theme parks in the Orlando area.
Registration fees, which must be received by June 15, are $100 for adults
and $50 for youth and children. Registration includes materials, Friday
evening's entertainment (to be announced), workshops and activities for
children.
Rooms at the Rosen Plaza Hotel are available for the special convocation
rate of $93 per night, one to four persons per room. Reservations must be
