Plans shaping up for 2003 youth assembly
Triennial event will be held in Louisville
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE - Planning is well underway for "Shine Like the Stars," the triennial national event of the Presbyterian Youth Connection.
Sponsored by the Office of Youth Ministry in the Congregational Ministries Division, the Connection Assembly 2003 takes place July 30 - Aug. 3 in Louisville.
The event will include three program tracks:
* Leader development - through workshops and presbytery caucuses
* Worship and spiritual discipline - through corporate worship and personal devotions
* Legislative session - delegates chosen by their presbyteries will discuss, debate and vote on issues of concern that will then be forwarded to PC(USA) governing bodies for their further consideration.
The Assembly will also include recreation, networking, exhibits and a "spiritual center"
for prayer and meditation, counseling and quiet conversation.
For the first time, Connection Assembly 2003 will be open to anyone. Previous Assemblies have been delegated, with presbyteries allotted a certain number of voting delegates. Voting in the legislative session may still be restricted, organizers say, but there will be no limit on the number of participants in all other activities.
A pre-Assembly event for racial ethnic youth and young adults from July 28-30 will address - through cultural celebrations, worship and workshops - how the systems and structures of the Presbyterian Church (USA) can be made more inclusive so that all voices may be heard.
Registration brochures will be available in Fall 2002 from presbytery offices and the Office of Youth Ministry. They will also be on the web at www.pcusa.org/youthministry. Registration begins January 1, 2003, and ends May 1, 2003. Registration fee will be $235, not including travel and hotel.
