National-issues panel wraps up its business early
by Midge Mack
COLUMBUS, OH - It's unusual for a General Assembly committee to finish its work on Monday of GA week, but the National Issues Committee did it, burrowing through its 12-item agenda with plenty of time to spare.
After working through overtures on energy, government "takings" of property and a boycott in support of Florida farm workers, the committee approved the following for recommendation to the Assembly:
* An affirmation of civil rights and non-discrimination;
* A resolution on restorative justice from the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP);
* A resolution from the Advisory Committee on Litigation urging support for measures safeguarding religious liberty;
* A resolution to clean up power-plant pollution, enforce clean-air laws and end the "grandfather" loophole that exempts older, coal-fired plants;
* Refer to Self Development of People and One Great Hour of Sharing agencies a resolution on assisting the poor in a distressed part of Alabama;
* A resolution to develop a Christian response to the terror attacks of last Sept. 11 and ensuing developments.
