Redevelopment network hears a success story
by Emett Barfield
Columbus, OH - Jeanne Radak, coordinator of the Churchwide Redevelopment Training Network (CRTN), said the organization is committed to providing an "organic web of relationships, support, and education for redevelopment churches, practitioners, governing-body staff and committee persons" in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Radak and Steve Boots, associate for congregational development in the Congregational Ministries Division, were hosts of a luncheon meeting of the network on July 18.
Speakers for the event were Alika and Ralph Galloway, a clergy couple who co-pastor the Kwanzaa Community Fellowship in St. Paul, MN, a combination new-church/redevelopment congregation. The church is the former Highland Park Presbyterian Church, which revitalized itself to serve its community, with the help of Boots' program.
The Galloways accepted the challenge and devised a strategy for their new ministry based on the CRTN's "Five Dynamics of Redevelopment": creating spiritual energy, establishing congregational identity, developing leadership, re-engaging the community, and creating a plan for ministry.
Alika Galloway talked about creating spiritual energy, an activity she exemplifies in her high-energy worship and preaching. "To create spiritual energy is to be energetic," she said. She said a church leader who wants to create a dynamic spiritual life for his or her congregation must begin by creating such a life for the self.
Ralph Galloway recounted several tales about the spiritual journeys undertaken by members of his congregation and said the best way to build an effective ministry plan is to "Listen, listen, listen." He said congregational unity "comes out of relationships."
