Assembly urges boycott of Taco Bell
by Midge Mack
COLUMBUS, OH - In response to Overture 44 from the Presbytery of Tampa Bay, the 214th General Assembly voted 297-176 Friday support a national boycott of Taco Bell restaurants. The boycott is intended to focus attention on working and living conditions among the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. The Immokalees pick tomatoes that are used in products sold by Taco Bell.
By a 353-130 vote the Assembly approved Overture 51 from the Presbytery of Baltimore asking the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy to undertake a study of "takings," the concept that any governmental action that restricts the private property rights of real property owners, thereby decreasing the value of the property, requires compensation under the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
As recommended by the Assembly Committee on National Issues, the Assembly disapproved a commissioners' resolution calling on Congress to safeguard the definition of marriage contained in the Book of Order as "a civil contract between a woman and a man" in civil law including a Federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution.
