by Alexa Smith
LOUISVILLE - The Rev. Paul S. Stavrakos, vice president of church relations at the Board of Pensions (BOP) of the Presbyterian Church (USA), has announced that he will retire at the end of 2002.
Stavrakos joined the BOP in 1989 after 26 years in parish ministry in Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Wheaton, IL. He helped create the Board's Seminary Debt Assistance Program for first-call ministers serving small congregations, as well as the BOP's regional service teams.
He was instrumental in forming the New Pastor's Leadership Team of Churchwide Personnel Services in the National Ministries Division, and managed the BOP's assistance and retirement housing programs. He recently helped negotiate the sale of Morganwood, a retirement community in Swarthmore, PA, to PresbyHomes & Services, a mission program of the Presbytery of Philadelphia.
Stavrakos was named a fellow in Pastoral Leadership Development at Princeton Theological Seminary, where he earned his Master of Arts degree. His theological degree is from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis.
He served as vice-moderator of the presbyteries of Philadelphia and Chicago and on the board of Philadelphia Presbyterian Homes and Services for the Aging. He was a member of the Mayor's Committee on Race Relations and the boards of the American Cancer Society and the Fox Chase Cancer Center.
He and his wife, Judy, have a son and a daughter.
