ABCUSA: Conference to Examine Baptist Freedom

American Baptist News Service (7/23/02)--"Baptist Freedom in the 21st
Century: Engaging the Postmodern Culture," a major conference scheduled for
this fall, will examine the intersection of postmodern culture and the
traditional Baptist emphasis on freedom.
The event, to be held Oct. 8-10 at First Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.,
is sponsored by The Roger Williams Fellowship, the Alliance of Baptists and
the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs.
Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and author Doug Marlette will be the
keynote speaker. Other participants include the Rev. Dr. Thomas Halbrooks,
president, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School; the Rev. Dr. Kate
Harvey, executive director, American Baptist Churches USA Minister's
Council; the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Haggray, executive minister, District of
Columbia Baptist Convention; the Rev. David Wheeler, pastor, First Baptist
Church, Los Angeles; the Rev. John Burns, pastor, University Baptist Church
in College Park, Md.; and Brent Walker, executive director, and Hollyn
Hollman, general counsel, Baptist Joint Committee.
Registration for the event is $40 per person. Information, fliers and
