3,000 'servants' take part
in events in three nations
This summer 3,000 young people and adults in The Lutheran Church--Missouri
Synod worked at 78 "servant events" in the United States, Mexico and
Germany.
Those interested in hosting an event next year must submit their
applications by Sept. 1.
"The effectiveness of these events hosted by LCMS camps, social-service
agencies and congregations illustrates the need for more, especially
congregation-based, servant events," says Jim Lohman of LCMS District and
Congregational Services -- Youth Ministry. "New sites are always needed so
everyone interested in serving can have the opportunity to serve."
This year, congregations hosted 18 servant events.
Since the youth-ministry office began its servant-events program 21 years
ago, more than 30,000 LCMS youth and adults have participated in more than
1,000 events, "making a difference in the lives of thousands of others,"
Lohman said. He also indicated that the number of people interested in
working at a servant event in the Synod has doubled in the past decade.
Among typical servant-event activities are construction at camps and
churches; maintenance and repair work in communities; personal care for the
disadvantaged, physically challenged and the elderly; assistance with VBS
programs and camp ministry; and involvement in environmental efforts at
camps and within communities.

servant events are available online at
