Women in Taiwan's modern society marry later in life than did
their mothers. They also put off pregnancy. Medical research
has been applied to the problem of preserving or renewing the
potential for them to give birth at higher ages than was commonly
accepted only decades ago. Mackay Memorial Hospital, an agency
of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) recently published new
findings on the revival and fertilization of frozen ova, the
experimental results revive the hopes of many women who have
given up the idea of bearing children.
The research uncovered the role of a genetic material,
Fallotein, in the process of fertilization. The announcement was
made at the Pan Pacific Fertility Conference, recently hosted by
Mackay. The research was a cooperative venture with the National
Taiwan University Hospital in Taipei.
Dr. Li Kuo-kuang , chief of Obstetrics at Mackay, said that
the research, though conducted primarily on animals, held out
great hope as a foundation for further studies into human
fertility extension and renewal.
