Chia-wei (Ka-ui) Presbyterian Church in Southern Taiwan's
Kaohsiung County is hosting the Greater Kang-shan Neighborhood
College, the first such ministry in all Taiwan. On September
14th the campus was opened with a loud and boisterous ceremony.
Classes will begin meeting on September 23rd.
The college's principal is the church's pastor, the Rev. Lu
Huei-jer. He said "Opening a neighborhood college is a way of
taking advantage of community resources. The entire community can
grow from its base. A neighborhood college nourishes the
residents here in becoming new creations. Our church sees
hosting the college as the opening of a gospel window. Each
participating student and teacher becomes exposed to the gospel."
The Ta Kang-shan Neighborhood College seeks to enliven the
community, increase knowledge, educate the people and participate
in social empowerment. It hopes to become an agency of the
community. Courses to be offered include: Community Building;
Marriage and Family Studies; Quality of Life; Ecological
Production; Welfare and Service; and Cultural Arts. Each course
includes life, community, skill and other components.
The college's catchment area includes 11 townships of
Kaohsiung County north of the Kaohsiung City line. The region is
rich in human and natural resources. The many local schools and
technical institutes offer resources to churches, grassroots
groups and government agencies which can be put to profitable use
for the neighborhood college's purposes.
Rev. Lu plans to make use of his church connections to staff
the college's faculty. He asks Christians everywhere to support
the mission venture through prayer and participation.
