World Mission seeks missionaries
for short-, long-term positions

LCMS World Mission staff say they could easily place 500 people into short-
and long-term missionary positions next year, and they are encouraging more
LCMS members to consider such service.

No experience is necessary for "relationship builder" positions, in which
volunteers teach conversational English in more than a dozen Asian, Eastern
European, South American and Caribbean countries.

Volunteer missionary Jennifer Jackson of Ann Arbor, Mich., worked with
young children at an English-language school in Taiwan last year, and says
she believes she "made a difference" in their lives and knows that "they've
touched my life."

Jackson, 27, said volunteer service is ideal for those who are "flexible,
who can adapt to anything" and who are "willing to try new things."

"You have to go with an open heart, letting God use you in the way that He
wants to," Jackson said.

"Most people have something to offer as a missionary," added Kurt Buchholz,
counselor for long-term volunteer missionaries and specialized ministries
with LCMS World Mission.

And opportunities for service, he said, are available in a number of
countries, a variety of positions and for various lengths of time -- from
two weeks to one or more years.

Current service opportunities include positions for:
-- a child-care worker, to serve two weeks in Ivory Coast, West Africa,
next March.
-- nurses and/or physicians, to serve three weeks in Kazakhstan next summer.
-- house parents, to serve one to three months at an orphanage
in Brazil, anytime next year.
-- a music leader, to serve a year in Germany, beginning in 2003.

"We want to encourage people, no matter what they do, to think about
serving the church," said Sean Harlow, LCMS World Mission's counselor for
recruitment. "The need is always there," Harlow said, for placing
missionaries, either through the Synod's mission board or its partner
agencies.
