On the Eve of the Congressional Vote:  Prominent Americans Declare
Opposition to War

Press Conference, Noon Thursday, October 10, 2002
National Press Club, First Amendment Room, 529 14th St., NW, Washington,
D.C.

   With Congress on the verge of voting, growing numbers of Americans are
taking to the streets demanding more information from our nations leaders
and questioning our countrys haste for war. Prominent leaders representing
broad constituencies -- religious, academic, business, labor, military,
diplomatic, legal, women, African American, Latino, and Iraqi-American --
will hold a luncheon press conference at noon Thursday (Oct. 10) to voice
their opposition to the impending conflict with Iraq. The leaders echo the
views of the many Americans who oppose the war.  Foreign Policy in Focus
staff report that they have counted more than 200 public protests nationwide
last week and this week.
